Statics Glossary

axial forceForce that acts along a member's axis of interest.
axial load – Load due to an axial force (see above for axial force). Also, same as axial force.
load – Means force.
resultant – The sum of the magnitude and direction of a set of vectors.
statically indeterminate – When statics is not sufficient to determine either the reactions or the internal forces.
transverse forces – Forces at right angles to the longitudinal axis of a member, typically two forces opposing each other. Transverse forces tend to cause a shear stress in a member. (picture)
transverse load – Load due to transverse forces (see above for transverse forces). Also, same as transverse forces.
two force member – A member with two forces applied to it. Typically, a force at each end. Typically, the forces oppose each other and are at opposite ends of the member. (picture)
