High-Speed Tool Steel

Details

Material hierarchy: Metal - Ferrous metal - Steel - Tool Steel

High-speed tool steels are used as cutting tools in machining processes. They are formulated for high wear resistance and hot hardness. The original high-speed steels (HSS) were developed around 1900. They permitted dramatic increases in cutting speed compared to previously used tools; hence their name. The two AISI prefix letters indicate the principal alloying element: either T (tungsten) or M (molybdenum).
