Melamine

Details

Material hierarchy: Polymer - Thermoset

Melamine molding compounds are best known for their extreme hardness, excellent and permanent colorability, arc-resistant nontracking characteristics, and self-extinguishing flame resistance. Dishware and household goods plus some electrical uses have been primary applications.

General-purpose grades for dishes or kitchenware usually are alpha-cellulose-filled. Mineral-filled grades provide improved electrical properties; fabric and glass fiber reinforcements provide higher shock resistance and strength.

The chemical resistance of the material is relatively good, although it is attacked by strong acids and alkalis. Melamines are tasteless and odorless, and are not stained by pharmaceuticals and many foodstuffs.

Like the other member of the amino family, urea, the melamines find extensive use outside of the molding area in the form of adhesives, coating resins, and laminating resins.
