Styrene-maleic anhydride is abbreviated SMA. With heat distortion temperatures reaching almost 250°F, SMA copolymers can be used in applications outside the range of other styrenics. The maleic anhydride component also imparts extra adhesion to glass fibers in reinforced grades. Impact grades are produced by copolymerization with butadiene or by alloying with ABS. SMA materials require thorough drying before processing.
Common Applications
automotive instrument panels, headliners, and interior trim
instrument panel supports (glass-reinforced)
appliances
business machines
pumps
Electroplatable grades are used to mold automotive and appliance parts.
