Thermodynamics

Quick
Thermodynamics is the study of heat and work and those properties of substances that bear a relation to heat and work.

Details

Thermodynamics lays groundwork for subsequent studies in such fields as fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and statistical thermodynamics. Internal energy and enthalpy are introduced in connection with the first law, entropy with the second law. Thermodynamics is basic to the study of materials, chemical reactions, and plasmas. It is the science of energy and entropy. It is the science that deals with heat and work and those properties of substances that bear a relation to heat and work. Thermodynamics is the study of energy transformations involving heat, mechanical work, and other aspects of energy and how these transformations relate to the properties of matter. It can be considered the study of the thermal energy (often called the internal energy) of systems. The central concept of thermodynamics is temperature. Its applications turn up in such places as car engines, refrigerators, biochemical processes, the structure of stars, power plants, and turbojet engines.
